Meeting of Experts to Adopt a Code of Practice on Safety and Health in Agriculture

At its 307th Session (March 2010), the Governing Body decided to convene a second Meeting of Experts from 25-29 October 2010 to consider a revised draft code of practice on safety and health in agriculture.

The meeting comprised five Employer and five Worker experts nominated by their respective groups, as well as five Government experts from Costa Rica, Kenya, South Africa, Thailand and United Kingdom.

This report describes the proceedings of the second Meeting of Experts from 25-29 October 2010. The discussion topics covered were objectives and scope, the characteristics of occupational safety and health (OSH) in agriculture, developing a national framework for OSH in agriculture, OSH management systems, competence, education and training, contingency and emergency preparedness, machinery and work equipment safety, ergonomics and the handling of materials, chemicals, dusts and other particulate matter and other biological exposures, noise, vibration, agricultural installations, transport of persons, equipment and materials, animal production, weather and the environment, personal protective equipment (PPE), welfare facilities and workplace wellness programmes. Subsequent to this meeting, the Code of Practice on Safety and Health in Agriculture was successfully adopted at the 309th (March 2011) Session of the Governing Body.
