Prospects for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in the food and drink industries in Guyana

Working Paper 227

The working paper establishes that the food and beverage processing sector is a growth platform for Guyana given its comparative advantages and its potential for economic development. Even though Guyana has been progressed in developing new products, its preferential trade agreements, the implementation of fiscal and industrial incentives to support agro-processing and the sector’s proper regulation, the local standards are behind the requirements in international markets leading the sector to fulfill only around 20% of its potential as producer and distributor. Part of the challenges faced is the un-coordinated private sector and the absence of national sectoral policy.
