The VZF team conducted a comprehensive mapping of the entire garment value chain, an OSH Risk Assessment and a study on a ‘business case for OSH’, aiming to frame interventions from the perspective of cost-effectiveness and market-based incentives to address OSH issues in the chain.

The garment sector in Myanmar is one of the vital industries that supports the economic development of Myanmar and provides many job opportunities for the country’s workers. The sector is now estimated to employ a range of between 350,000 and 450,000 workers, 90 per cent of whom are women. The latest list from Myanmar Garment Manufacturer Association indicates that 518 factories are currently operational in the country.

Myanmar is the seventh largest producer of ginger in the world and it has a high potential to expand its exports. Cultivation of ginger represents a major cash crop for smallholders and a source of income for individuals in rural areas, such as in South Shan, where the majority of Myanmar’s ginger is grown.
