2016 ILO’s global media competition

Award for Excellence in reporting on “Breaking Stereotypes on Labour Migration”

To mark this year’s International Migrants Day, the ILO in collaboration with the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), the International Organisation of Employers (IOE), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Equal Times, Solidarity Center, Human Rights Watch, Migrant Forum in Asia, and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) are pleased to announce the results of the 2016 Global Media Competition ‘Breaking Stereotypes on Labour Migration’.

This year’s competition was very successful and included the participation of 210 journalists and reporters from 69 countries around the world. The competition’s reviewing committee had the difficult task of shortlisting 25 entries among outstanding pieces, and an independent panel composed of 5 international judges did the excellent job of selecting the following four final winners (two in the “Written articles” category and two in the “Video/Multimedia” category):

Global Media Competition Submission Map



The global media competition has proven to be one effective way to encourage unbiased and quality media coverage on labour migration. The winners will be invited to a small prize ceremony around International Migrants’ Day to receive their certificates and their $1000 prize. Please share and promote the winners’ work as a model of fair media coverage.
