  1. The ILO launches recovery grants for refugee and host community-owned businesses

    To contribute to the recovery of COVID-affected businesses, the ILO has launched a small business grant scheme, targeting 200 enterprises owned by refugees and host community members in Rhino Camp, West Nile, and Nakivale in Isingiro District in Western Uganda. 

  2. Seventy students graduate from the industrial welding skills programme in Turkana and Garissa, Kenya

    13 July 2021

    The ILO in Kenya collaborated with the East African Institute of Welding (EAIW), the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) and the county governments of Turkana and Garissa to introduce a six-month welder training programme to empower youth, provide them with employment-relevant skills and address the mismatch between skills and jobs available in the labour market in Turkana and Garissa counties.

  3. Supporting host and refugee communities in Ethiopia to start and improve their businesses

    From March to June 2021, the International Labour Organization (ILO), in partnership with UNHCR, international NGOs IRC and ZOA, regional and district jobs creation offices and district administration offices supported capacity-building workshops for over 200 micro-enterprise operators, nearly half of whom were women.

    At the end of June 2021, the ILO PROSPECTS programme in Sudan held a four-day workshop with representatives from the East Darfur and West Kordofan Local Economic Development Committees (LEDCs).

    The training targets young internally displaced people, refugees and host community members looking to start their businesses, or existing businesses wanting to develop and grow their enterprises. 

  9. World Refugee Day: The power of inclusion

    World Refugee Day, 20 June, is the international day designated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe. It celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations and events seriously disturbing public order. This goal continues to grow in importance as the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) estimates that almost 82.5 million were forcibly displaced at the end of 2020.
