    The Government of Sweden and the ILO’s Labour Migration Branch co-hosted a High-level Breakfast Roundtable on Innovations in Labour Migration Governance and Development Outcomes: Making Decent Work a Reality for Migrant Workers, ahead of the United Nations General Assembly High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development on 26 September, 2013.

    Training Course on Strategies to Strengthen Domestic Workers Organizations

    A two week training course was held in Turin to strengthen capacities of workers’ and domestic workers’ organizations as well as promote the ratification of the ILO Convention 189 and decent work for domestic and migrant domestic workers.

    ILO Presentation at the GFMD Second Thematic Meeting on "Recruitment, labour migration and diaspora: Improving labour market complementarities and economic development outcomes",

    The Second Thematic Meeting of the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) was held at the ILO in Geneva on 11 September 2013. The meeting addressed "Recruitment, labour migration and diaspora: Improving labour market complementarities and economic development outcomes". ILO's Director of the Conditions of Work and Equality Department, Ms. Manuela Tomei presented critical analysis and recommendations on improving development outcomes in her presentation "Labour migration, recruitment and skills recognition and certification: how to maximize outcomes for migrant workers as well as countries of origin and destination?" Ms.Tomei considered three themes: (1) How to improve responsiveness of migration policies and systems to meet genuine labour market needs; (2) How to enhance transparency and fairness in recruitment for better job-worker matching and better outcomes for migrant workers; and (3) How to best assess potential for skills recognition and standards across countries in order to overcome obstacles to labour market integration.

    Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Meeting on "Migration and human rights: towards the 2013 High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development", 4 September 2013

    This high-level meeting was organized by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and coincided with the launch of the OHCHR report on Migration and Human Rights: Improving Human Rights-Based Governance of International Migration, which was prepared in response to a decision of the UN Secretary-General's Policy Committee in December 2012.

    South African Development Community(SDAC) Labour Migration Workshop

    21 - 23 August 2013

    The Southern African Development Community (SADC) secretariat, with the support of the ILO and the IOM, convened a strategic labour migration workshop for the sub-region, to enhance the SADC Action Plan on Labour Migration which focused on policy assessment, social security, data collection and low and high-skilled migration.

    Panel discussion - Youth migration and development: Moving Development forward

    For this year’s International Youth Day 2013, the United Nations Secretariat (DESA) and the International Labour Office (ILO), with the support of the Millennium Development Goals Achievement Fund Secretariat (MDG-F), are co-organizing an event to celebrate the Day. The event will bring together young people, civil society organizations and UN and other experts to discuss issues relating to youth migration.
