Workshop to prepare for a Sector Study in Kyrgyzstan (ECLM project)

A Workshop was held in Bishkek from July 25-29 in in the context of the project "Assessing the economic contribution of labour migration in developing countries as countries of destination" (ECLM). The workshop was organised in collaboration with OcOO DialectICON, a research institution in Kyrgyzstan, and discussed the implementation of a study of the manufacturing and trade sectors.

The workshop was the second event in Kyrgyzstan for the EU-funded ECLM project, which is jointly implemented by the OECD Development Centre and the ILO, following the National Consultation Seminar held in this country on 17 November 2015. The national consultation seminar brought together more than 40 policymakers, government officials and experts. Built upon the support from the stakeholders who participated in the seminar, the research team for the sector study will study the economic impacts of immigration in the two sectors.

During the workshop, the main instruments for qualitative data collection in the manufacturing and trade sectors were discussed in detail and tested in the field. The instruments will be used to conduct stakeholder interviews, focus group discussions among workers and interviews with companies active in manufacturing and trade. The study aims to provide an overview of immigrant workers in these sectors in Kyrgyzstan and to analyse why the economic contribution of migrant workers in these sectors might be different from the contribution of native workers. Similar studies have been undertaken by the ECLM project in collaboration with research institutions in Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana and Nepal.
