ILO at the 2018 United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

The ILO participated actively in the 11th Session of the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) from 9-13 July 2018 at UN Headquarters in Geneva.

ILO contributions during the session included the following:

- Inputs with regard to a draft study prepared by EMRIP on free, prior and informed consent.

- Sharing information on ILO activities to build capacity for applying the Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention, 1989 (No. 169) and lessons learned with regard to the design of legislation concerning consultations.

NHRIs at the ILO
- Hosting a workshop for national human rights institutions on the ILO’s standard system with a focus on Convention No. 169 at the ILO, in collaboration with the the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR) and support from the European Union.




- Co-hosting a side event on 11 July on the role of national human rights institutions with regard to the promotion and protection of the rights of indigenous peoples, jointly with the Danish Institute for Human rights (DIHR), the Danish Permanent Mission to the UN in Geneva, the Australian Permanent Mission to the UN, the European Union and the International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA).
