The training was opened by Iran’s Minister of Cooperatives, Labour and Social Affairs. Discussions amongst participants pointed to emerging priorities for green jobs promotion in the country in sustainable agriculture, eco-tourism, and the use of information and communication technologies to advance decent work and environmental sustainability.

Water was identified as one of the main challenges for sustainable agriculture with concerns of overuse and risks of water stress.

Furthermore Iran is ranked second in the world in natural gas reserves and fourth in proven crude oil reserves. The low price of energy and fossil fuels was also identified by the participants as a challenge for a transition toward environmental sustainability, as their high consumption is causing air pollution and health problem.

Iran submitted its Nationally Determined Contribution on climate change in 2015. Its key environmental challenges relate to energy, water management, agriculture, drought and pollution.

Therefore the training was proposed as a capacity building event, which addressed the central question of how to realize the potential for green jobs in Iran. It covered the following themes:
  1.  Measurement and assessments for green jobs
  2. Water and Jobs
  3. Waste management and recycling
  4. Managing and planning for an energy transition
  5. Skills, entrepreneurship and labour
