Employment Intensive Approaches create decent jobs in cultural heritage development

A joint ILO/EU/UNESCO project is supporting the conservation and rehabilitation of cultural heritage at the World Heritage Site of the Erbil Citadel. The ILO is applying Employment Intensive Investment Programme (EIIP) approaches to create decent jobs for around 1,000 workers. In addition, the ILO through EIIP approaches will facilitate the recognition of skills for 40 workers in three different occupations related to the conservation of historical sites. EIIP Technical Officer Bashar Elsamarneh explains.

Yasin Muhumad Faarah, an Ethiopian farmer, lost all his cattle in a recent drought. Without a regular supply of water, his future livelihood and that of other members of the community was in jeopardy. Together they built a water collection basin that promises a viable future for them all.
