Solomon Islands: Cash for work helps natural disaster recovery

Climate change directly affects lives around the world, especially as extreme weather events become more common. In the Solomon Islands, villages were washed away when heavy torrential rains, caused two rivers to burst their banks. The ILO's Cash for Work program helps the government, and workers from those communities restore their villages and livelihoods.

Haiyan: Helping vulnerable communities in Coron with Decent Work

Typhoon Haiyan killed 8,000 and affected nearly 16 million people across the Philippines. And while Tacloban City sustained the most destruction, other more remote places also suffered heavy damage. Lives and livelihoods, infrastructure and services were all lost on the vacation island of Coron. A year after Haiyan, the island's people are gradually restoring some of what was lost, and at the same time, learning new skills and ways to support their families.

ERA Labour-based rural roads works and contractor training in Timor-Leste - EU & ILO partnership

The European Union (EU) is improving the lives of rural people in Timor-Leste through the ERA Project. This project is implemented by the International Labour Organization (ILO) together with the Government of Timor-Leste with the objective of enhancing rural access by training and involving local entrepreneurs to rehabilitate and maintain rural roads using a labour-based approach.

Japan allocates US$500,000 to help typhoon Haiyan livelihood recovery

The Government of Japan and the ILO have allocated US$500,000 to help support the post-Haiyan response in the Philippines. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan has provided the funds under the ILO/Japan Fund for Building Social Safety Nets in Asia and the Pacific. The fund is to be used to support the recovery from natural disaster.

Developing self reliance – Building hope: The ILO Employment for Peace Programme in Somalia

Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia, has been racked by violence and insecurity for nearly two decades. But there are signs of hope: among them, an ILO programme which provided a visible peace dividend to poor communities by engaging them in large scale employment-intensive projects. This and similar projects will be discussed at the ILO-IGAD-African Union Conference on "Employment for Peace, Stability and Development" on 11-12 April 2011 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Conference will map out a regional strategy for the Horn of Africa built upon a “virtuous triangle” consisting of the creation of employment opportunities, social protection for the most vulnerable and empowerment of people and communities. Gonaives: Preparing for the next big storm

Come hurricane season, the citizens of Gonaives in northern Haiti brace for the worse. Five years ago, Hurricane Jeanne ripped through its shores sending walls of water and mud down the surrounding slopes and changing the face of the city forever. A project managed by the International Labour Organization (ILO) has been helping local residents organize themselves to build erosion control networks to protect the city from mudslides and heavy run-off. But as ILO Online reports, the challenge does not stop at the hillsides.
