Commission of Inquiry for the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela holds its first session

High-level investigation will ascertain facts and make recommendations to address the problems raised in the complaint.

GENEVA (ILO News) –The Commission of Inquiry, set up by the ILO Governing Body in March 2018 to examine a complaint against the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, held its first session at the ILO Headquarters in Geneva on 8-9 August.

The complaint, lodged in June 2015 by 33 employers’ delegates at the International Labour Conference, alleges attacks, harassment, aggression and a campaign to discredit the employers’ organization – FEDECAMARAS – its leaders and affiliates. It refers to the non-observance of ILO Conventions No. 26 (Minimum Wage-Fixing Machinery Convention, 1928 ), No. 87 (Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organise Convention, 1948 ) and No. 144 (Tripartite Consultation (International Labour Standards), 1976).

This first session of the Commission has launched the procedure of the Commission of Inquiry to carry out a full investigation of the complaint which will ascertain all the facts of the case and make recommendations to address the problems raised in the complaint.

The members of the Commission, made a solemn declaration before the ILO Director-General to honourably, faithfully, impartially and conscientiously perform their duties.
