  3. Disturbing rise in global unemployment, says ILO

    Global unemployment is on the rise again, according to the ILO's Global Employment Trends 2013 report. 4.2 million more people joined the unemployed in 2012, and another 5.1 million more are expected to become unemployed in 2013 . With consumers not spending, firms not investing and banks not lending sufficiently, the weakness in aggregate demand is having a negative effect on the labour market. Austerity programs have also limited opportunities for employment growth, says Moazam Mahmood, Director of the ILO Economic and Labour Market Analysis Department, in an interview with the BBC.

    Around 85 million people with disabilities live in China and despite progress made over the past 30 years, there are many challenges to ensure their equality and dignity. ILO Beijing Director Ann Herbert appeared on CCTV's 'Dialogue' saying that infrastructure and institutional barriers must be improved in China. She also noted that cultural barriers must be broken down to create an inclusive society.

They represent more than two thirds of the country's unemployed and of the 5 million young people who do have work, many are in "precarious" conditions, without social benefits or job security. So instead of looking for a job, many young Peruvians prefer to looking toward themselves and starting their own businesses.

Thousands have lost jobs in construction and other sectors that were heavily dependent on them in boom times. Now unable to send enough money back home,growing numbers rely on the informal economy to get by, according to Steven Tobin, Senior Economist at the International Institute for Labour Studies.

Unemployment in the single-currency area could reach almost 22 million over the next four years, according to the "Eurozone jobs crisis: trends and policy responses". ILO TV interviewed Vincenzo Spiezia, Senior Economist at ILO's International Institute for Labour Studies, which authored the report.

  7. A green initiative brightens Bangladesh

    70% of all families living in Bangladesh’s countryside are not connected to the national electricity grid; the power lines either haven’t reached their villages or the cost of connection is too high for them. But now, with help from the ILO and Australia, and encouraged by the central government some villagers can get low cost solar power as an alternative energy source. And new skills are required to bring solar power to Bangladesh’s villages, which is creating the demand for “green jobs” to get the job done.

    According to a report issued by the ILO along with the Green Jobs Initiative, up to 60 million jobs over the next two decades could be achieved by moving to a greener economy. "There can be substantial net gains in employment, social inclusion and poverty reduction through an integrated approach to economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development", declared ILO Director-General, Juan Somavia, today in Geneva.
