Towards safer working conditions in the Bangladesh ready-made garment sector

The activities and results of the first phase of ILO's Improving Working Conditions in the Ready-Made Garment Sector Programme (2013-2017)

The collapse of Rana Plaza in April 2013 highlighted the need for an immediate effort to enhance safety in the Bangladesh ready-made garment sector. The ILO with the support of Canada, the Netherlands and United Kingdom responded though the Improving Working Conditions in the Ready-Made Garment Sector Programme in September 2013. By June 2017 the first phase of the programme had been concluded. During its lifetime the initiative has made a number of major achievements towards enhancing workplace safety in the garment industry which are detailed in this publication.
