Towards Decent Work in Lebanon: Issues and Challenges in Light of the Syrian Refugee Crisis

The objective of this report is to review labour market and employment conditions and focuses on both the quantity and quality of jobs in Lebanon in the wake of the Syrian refugee crisis.

The purpose of the report is to bring attention to the fact that unemployment rates are only one part of the problem in Lebanon and that it is important to focus on decent work in tandem with the reduction of unemployment.

Decent work has been defined by the International Labour Organization and endorsed by the international community as being productive work in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity. Decent work delivers a fair income, provides security in the workplace and social protection for workers and their families, encourages social integration, gives people the freedom to express their concerns, collectively organize and participate in decisions that affect their lives, and guarantees equal opportunities for all. This is what Lebanon needs today.
