The Confederation of Mongolian Trade Unions (CMTU) conducted eight training workshops to improve working conditions and law compliance within four high-risk sectors - construction, mining, textile, and energy sectors. The workshops focused on strengthening the knowledge and skills of employees and sectoral trade unions on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) regulations, compliance of the revised Labour Law, and prevention of occupational incidents and acute poisoning in the workplace.

With 189 participants overall, 92 of whom were women, the training series were developed for elected trade union activists for OSH issues in high-risk sectors. The workshops were designed by CMTU with technical support from the ILO, to model best practices in the delivery of OSH, with a participatory, interactive, and experiential approach, allowing inputs from participants. Led and organised by the sectoral trade unions, the capacity-building training provided comprehensive guidelines to improve the adherence to OSH regulations and the revised Labour Law, and helped identify OSH hazards and risks, promoting the culture of prevention of occupational incidents in the workplaces.

This work was complimentary to the efforts/interventions implemented by the General Agency for Specialised Inspection (GASI) and Mongolian Employers’ Federation (MONEF) in the context of improving working conditions and effectiveness of the labour inspection.

Furthermore, to strengthen efforts in preventing occupational accidents and risks, the EU-funded "SDG-Aligned Budgeting to Transform Employment in Mongolia" project supported CMTU in developing a handbook on OSH regulations and guidelines for workplaces within high-risk sectors.
