Cambodia's labour laws under review

A two-day international conference on possible revisions to Cambodia’s labour law is held in Phnom Penh.

Press release | 12 December 2005

A two-day international conference on possible revisions to Cambodia’s labour law will be held in Phnom Penh on December 13-14th, at the Hotel Cambodiana.

The gathering, the “First Stakeholders Conference to Determine Major Directions for the Revision of the Labour Law of Cambodia” gives the Government, Employers’ and Workers’ organizations a unique opportunity to focus on an issue of common interest—the revision of the Labour Law—in an open and collaborative way. These consultations as such would represent an important first step towards producing a Labour Law more attuned to the nation’s development needs.

The meeting is being organized by Cambodia’s Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training in cooperation with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and with the support of NZAID (New Zealand’s International Aid & Development Agency).

Conference speakers will include His Excellency Nhep Bunchin, Minister of Labour and Vocational Training, Royal Government of Cambodia; His Excellency Peter Ryder, Ambassador of New Zealand to Cambodia; and Ms. Christine Evans-Klock, Director of the ILO’s  Sub-regional Office for East Asia, Bangkok.

The media are invited to a briefing at the Hotel Cambodiana on Tuesday, December 13, from 9:30 to 10:00 AM. The conference facilitator, Judge Graeme Colgan from New Zealand,  representatives of Cambodia’s employers’ and workers’ organizations and from the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training and ILO experts will be available.
