Press release | Bangkok, Thailand | 26 September 2011

A high-level discussion on creating quality employment in Asia and the Pacific is being organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The event, on Monday 3 October 2011, will provide an opportunity for experts and policymakers to discuss the conclusions of the Special Chapter in the ADB’s annual publication Key Indicators for Asia and the Pacific, entitled “Toward Higher Quality Employment in Asia”. The event is open to the public.

Speakers at the event will include:

  • Douglas H. Brook, Assistant Chief Economist of the Asian Development Bank
  • Nicholas Rosellini, Deputy Regional Director, UNDP Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific.
  • Bill Salter, Director of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Decent Work Technical Support Team for East and South-East Asia and the Pacific.
  • Ursula Schaefer-Preuss, Vice-President for Knowledge Management and Sustainable Development, ADB (via video link)
  • Sachiko Yamamoto, Director of the ILO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific
  • Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, Secretary-General of the Thailand National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB)

Asia’s remarkable economic performance in the past two decades has led to substantial improvements in living standards, but this rapid economic growth has been accompanied by rising inequality and persistent vulnerability and poverty - in many countries more than 40 per cent of people are still below the US$2-a-day poverty line. This situation threatens social cohesion, political stability and potentially long-term competitiveness and development.

As Asia grapples with globalization and changing demographics it needs to create more high quality, productive jobs that satisfy public aspirations and spread the benefits of economic growth.

Members of the media are invited to attend the seminar, which will include a panel discussion and question and answer session. Registration starts at 8.30 a.m. and the event runs from 9.00 to 11.15 a.m. It will be held on Monday 3 October, at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand (FCCT), Penthouse Floor, Maneeya Centre, 518/5 Ploenchit Road, Bangkok (BTS Chitlom).
