Employment challenges for rural youth to be discussed at regional meeting

Delegates from seven Asian countries are expected to attend the meeting, “Addressing Challenges and Opportunities for Rural Youth Employment in Asia”, which will be held in Chiang Mai from 17 - 19 August. Bangkok, (ILO/FAO/UNESCO) –The challenges facing rural young people looking for work will be discussed at an international meeting in Chiang Mai next week.

Delegates from seven Asian countries are expected to attend the meeting, “Addressing Challenges and Opportunities for Rural Youth Employment in Asia”, which will be held in Chiang Mai from 17 - 19 August. About 30 participants from China, Cambodia, Laos, Mongolia, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam, representing the public and private sectors, NGOs and multi-lateral agencies are due to take part.

The workshop aims to encourage collaboration between those working to improve the employment and training of rural young people. Among the subjects to be discussed are policy coordination, formal education and training, community-based employment and income generation options, and labour market information.

The meeting is being jointly organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It will be opened by Ms. Sachiko Yamamoto, ILO Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific and Mr. Changchu He, FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative.

During the workshop a report, “Training and Employment Opportunities to Address Poverty among Rural Youth” will be launched. The report has been produced jointly by the ILO, FAO and UNESCO, and includes the findings of studies in a number of countries in Asia. The publication can be downloaded from the ILO website (www.ilo.org/asia click “Publications”) from Wednesday 19 August. Hard copies will also be available.

The meeting will be held at the Chiang Dao room, Centara Duangtawan Hotel, 132 Loykroh Road, Chiang Mai. from 09.00 on Monday 17 August to 15.00 on Wednesday 19 August. It is open to the press.
