The ILO in the Republic of Maldives

The Republic of Maldives joined the ILO in 2009.

The Maldivian archipelago consists of about 1,200 small low-lying islands, of which around 200 are inhabited and some 90 are developed as resort islands. The population numbers about 300,000. In addition there are approximately 80,000 migrant workers. The most important source of migrant labour is Bangladesh, followed by India and Sri Lanka. The most important economic sectors are tourism and fishing, and the majority of the workforce is employed in the fisheries industry

ILO work in the Maldives is handled by the ILO Office in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
