Programmes and projects

Technical cooperation programmes and projects implemented are one of the main means of action to support constituents in promoting decent work in the African region and to give effect to the Decent Work Agenda in Africa 2007-15.

Since 2002, a total of 560 technical cooperation programmes and projects have been approved for the African region, with a total budget of US$545.2 million. Practically all countries in the region have benefited from such interventions. As of December 2011, there were 205 active technical cooperation projects being managed by the ILO in the African region.

  1. The promotion of Gender Equality and Women's Economic Empowerment in Somalia

    The EU Gender project supports the promotion of gender equality and women’s economic empowerment in the workplace in Somalia through economic participation supporting broader equality and participation.

  1. Ghana Social Opportunities Project (GSOP)

    The Ghana Social Opportunities project aims to improve targeting in social protection spending; increasing access to cash transfers nationwide; and expand employment and cash-earning opportunities for the rural poor during the agricultural off-season. It is a complex project with a vast number of stakeholders and fields of operations.

  2. Eliminating the Worst Forms of Child Labour in West Africa and Strengthening Sub-Regional Cooperation through ECOWAS – II

    1 December 2010 - 31 December 2013

    This project, “Eliminating the Worst Forms of Child Labour in West Africa and Strengthening Sub-Regional Cooperation through ECOWAS II” (WA-ECOWAS II) aims to contribute to ongoing efforts by national governments, employers and workers’ organizations, civil society and community based organizations as well as the Executive Secretariat and other institutions of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to eliminate the worst forms of child labour in West Africa.

  5. Stabilization and early reintegration support for returnees in South Sudan

    The project builds upon a set of demonstration skills and enterprise training approaches that were piloted by the UN MDGF Achievement Fund Joint Programmes on Conflict Prevention and Peace Building and Youth Employment.

  6. Empowering women for peace and recovery in East Sudan

    1 January 2012 - 31 December 2013

    The project seeks to provide seeds funding for the priority areas of peace building through women economic empowerment and will work as a pilot to stimulate other donors who committed to support the implementation of ESPA (East Sudan Peace Agreement) to complement this fund.

  7. Pro-Poor Horticulture Value Chains in Upper Egypt

    1 January 2010 - 31 December 2013

    The purpose of the Pro-poor horticulture value chains in Upper Egypt joint programme is to promote viable equitable partnerships between small farmers and private sector investors in Upper Egypt. The programme supports small farmers through their Farmers Associations to deliver needed business services thus enabling them to participate in the governance of the supply chain.

  8. Mobilization of the Dahshour World Heritage Site for Community Development

    The Dahshour World Heritage Site for Community Development is a joint programme that is considered a model for cultural development as it combines cultural heritage aspects, natural heritage dimensions, and community development components.

  9. Sustainable Employment and Economic Development (SEED)

    The Sustainable Employment and Economic Development (SEED) programme aims at reducing conflict by improving economic and employment prospects, targeting young people and women in insecure areas.
