Promoting Fair and Effective Labour Migration Processes for Potential and Return Migrant Workers in Nigeria
The International Labour Organization (ILO) Engages with Employers’ Organizations in Nigeria to enhance engagement in the area of Labour Migration in Nigeria through capacity building on the promotion of fair labour migration and its processes.
LAGOS (ILO News): The International Labour Organization (ILO) within the framework of the Initiative for Labour Migration, Employment and Reintegration (LMER) in Nigeria and Ghana supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH. (GIZ), organized a two-day workshop for employers’ organizations in Nigeria towards enhancing knowledge and strengthening their capacity in promoting regular and effective labour migration processes.
The workshop objective was to enhance the capacity of Social Partners in the area of labour migration, with particular focus on strengthening the capacity of employers’ organizations on labour migration processes and governance for migrant workers. It further provided participants with the opportunity to proffer working strategies for collaboration and coordination between other national stakeholders relevant in contributing to facilitating regular and effective labour migration.
Participants in the training included members and affiliates of the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA) from across the country and The training focused on introducing the participants to key elements and concepts in understanding labour migration governance. The participants were also trained on identifying the relevance and contribution of labour migration to national development, and situating employers’ engagement within relevant national and international frameworks pertaining to labour migration including the National Policy on Labour Migration, the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration as well as the Sustainable Development Goals to mention a few.
As a country of origin, transit and destination of labour migrants, the need for sustained engagement of all stakeholders in promoting regular and effective labour migration remains a high priority in Nigeria. The implementation of the LMER project provides a platform for facilitating engagement with Social Partners and further strengthen collaboration in support of the policy on labour migration adopted by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 2014.
The outcomes and recommendations from the workshop are expected to contribute to a longer-term strategy for sustained interface with social partners and other stakeholders on effective labour migration governance in Nigeria.
